HISTORY

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority was formed in 2006 by community leaders to recruit major sporting events to the Sioux Falls area. The organization attracts international, national, regional and state sporting events by operating, leasing, enhancing or owning sports facilities in the Sioux Falls area. It is run by a board of directors made up of 15 community members, an executive director and project director.

Since its formation it has become an active member of The National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) and has successfully attained its first significant event, the Summit League Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments. The 2009 Summit League Tournaments was the first time ESPN broadcasted a "Live-Nationally Televised" event in Sioux Falls and South Dakota.   The SFSA is very excited and confident about the upcoming 2010 Summit League Tournament March 6-9, 2010.   Due to the overwhelming success of the 2009 tournament, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and Sioux Falls were awarded two addtional years (2011 and 2012) to host the Summit League Conference tournament .

The SFSA was also privileged to be a partner with the inaugural NSIC Holiday Hoopfest November 29-30, 2008.  We have just completed the second year of this event, November 28-29, 2009, with competitive and exciting games, setting up what will surely be an exciting NSIC Conference season.  This is one of the finest Division II pre-season basketball tournaments in the country.  

The Sioux Falls Sports Authority is pleased to announce and present a new event on the horizon...The Sioux Falls Marathon - Sunday - September 12, 2010.  The Sioux Falls Marathon will be held in conjunction with the already well established, run and attended Sioux Falls Half-Marathon, Miracle 5K and Children's Miracle Mile presented by the Sanford Wellness Center.  The Sioux Falls Sports Authority is simply adding a new and exciting event/race to an already very successful event, thus providing more opportunities for runners and the Sioux Falls community to shine.  We are currently working with course designers and engineers in developing and mapping the new course and anticipate announcing the marathon route sometime after the first of January, 2010.
